by Neel Desai, M.D.

Dr. Bob Wachter is the Chair of UCSF Department of Medicine and an author. His latest book, The Digital Doctor, explores the history of Electronic Health Records, where we are today, and where this healthcare transition is going.

He explores the promises and hype of early days of implementation of digitization of health records, as well as the unexpected and unfortunate outcomes on healthcare teams and patients.

His conclusions of where all this is going is surprisingly optimistic. How fast healthcare gets to that place depends on taking the right steps and direction. It involves minimizing third parties (like government regulations), to allow patients and healthcare professional teams to collaborate and connect for individualized context based decisions.

Check out Dr. Bob Wachter’s work, as he is our featured Medical Artist of the Week.
