“After a multitude of discussions with family and friends,
I realized that each one of us has our own unique view of death depending on our culture, religion, profession, etc. Death can be seen as a final moment of despair or a celebration of life depending on the individual. This echoed Buddha’s teachings that death is unavoidable but an individual’s perspective determines their relationship to it. I believe my view of death had been distorted by my immense recent focus on healing and prevention. I had forgotten the reality that all humans will die. Remembering and further accepting this simplest of truths has made me feel more comfortable and thereby, less fearful of not having all of the answers to a patient’s questions when they are faced with death. It seems that in the end, each person’s view of death dictates if they will ‘live happily ever after . . .’ The ultimate wisdom is that no one will get out of here alive.”
